The Inauguration of Councillor Tommy Smith as Tredegar
Town Mayor and Councillor Ryan Watkins as Tredegar Town
Deputy Mayor took place on Wednesday 1st May 2013. A
short Service was held in The Council Chamber at Bedwellty
House followed with friends and family joining to congratulate
Cllr Smith in The Carriage Room.
For his Year in Office, Cllr Smith chose the Valleys Life After
Stroke Group as the recipient of his Mayor's Appeal.
Valleys Life After Stroke (affililated with The Stroke
A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is
cut off which may be as a result of a blood clot or a blockage in
an artery. The effect can be devastating and life changing not just
for the sufferer but for their families too. Strokes are the fourth
biggest killer and there is currently a campaign giving advice
about F.A.S.T., the stroke recognition. Face, Arms, Speech, Time
are all key indicators that someone is suffering a stroke and if
these signs are recognised quickly it can increase their chance of

The Valleys Life After Stroke group was setup and is run by
volunteers who have suffered strokes themselves. The group is open
to everyone, stroke sufferers and their families or carers. The aim
is to give people the chance to share their experiences with people
who will know what they are going through; to offer advice and
support; to help boost confidence and reduce the feeling of
isolation. The group meets at the Community Lounge, Roderick
Hill Court, Dukestown Road, Tredegar. Besides their regular

A big thank you to Christine and John at the Lord Nelson,
Pontlottyn and Des at JD Entertainments who held a charity
night as my first fundraising event. The support from you
and the generosity of your patrons is truely appreciated.
A big, big thank you to everyone who took part in this year's
Step Out for Stroke Walk at Parc Bryn Bach. An amazing £2254.85
(which includes £100 paid direct to the Stroke Association) as been
raised so far. It was a fantastic day which everyone enjoyed.
Thanks to Tredegar & Rhymney Golf Club for graciously
holding my Charity Golf Day at their Club and also thanks to the
participants, supporters and sponsors; it was a fantastic day which
raised over a £1000 for my Appeal.
