Best Foot Forward For Charity - Walk To The Highest Point, Sunday 19th July 2015

Works to complete the dualling of the A465 Heads of the Valleys road between Tredegar and Brynmawr are nearing completion and Carillion is working with local charities to mark the occasion with a sponsored walk on 19th July 2015. This is the one and only opportunity to walk along the dual carriageway before it is officially opened to traffic.
The 5 year project cost £110m to construct, it provides 7.8 km or just under 8 miles of dual carriageway through Blaenau Gwent. When the A465 was built in the 1960s, the highest point on the road was 409 metres above sea level. The new Ebbw Vale east bridge at Garnlydan has taken the highest point on the route to 417 metres above sea level. This event will give walkers and riders the unique opportunity to walk the newest road in Wales.
To ensure as many people as possible enjoy this sponsored walk, the event is open to walkers, scooters (non-motorised), cycles, mobility scooters and wheelchairs. There will be an option of 3 different walk lengths of 2k, 4k or 6k. The start point for all of the walks will be the Carilion base on the Rassau Industrial Estate.
All funds raised on the walk will be given to the charities supported by this year's Blaenau Gwent and Tredegar Mayors Appeals. The Blaenau Gwent Mayors Appeal is for Ty Hafan Children's Hospice and Ysbyty'r Tri Chwm Whilst the Tredegar Mayor's Appeal is for Valley SANDS.
Tŷ Hafan is one of the UK's leading paediatric palliative care charities and offers care to children and support for their families, throughout Wales. They offer comfort, care and support to life-limited children, young people and their families in the hospice, in the community and in their home so they can make the most of the time they have left together. This allows parents and carers to relax and recharge their batteries and makes sure the needs of brothers and sisters are never forgotten.
Ysbyty'r Tri Chwm is a community hospital in Ebbw Vale catering for the mental health needs of people over 65. The funding will go towards providing a wide variety of activities for the day and stay patients, including painting, exercise, music and gardening. It will also help the further developments to the sensory garden and Memory Cafe.
Valley Sands is the local branch of SANDS - the stillbirth and neonatal death charity.  Sands supports anyone who has been affected by the death of a baby before, during or shortly after birth. They offer emotional support and information for parents, grandparents, siblings, children, families and friends, health professionals and others. The help they offer includes a telephone helpline for anyone affected by the death of a baby to talk about their feelings to experienced helpline teams who listen and give the information you need. They also supply Memory Boxes to local hospitals that contain practical items to help parents at their time of loss.
Cllr Derrick Bevan, Mayor of Blaenau Gwent is supporting Ty Hafan Children's Hospice and Ysbyty'r Tri Chwm in his Mayor's Appeal. Cllr Bevan said, 'These two charities are special to me because I want to do something to help children and the elderly in Blaenau Gwent. I recently visited Ty Hafan and I defy anyone to come from there with a dry eye. Dementia is a silent killer in our community and is on the increase. The work they do at Ysbyty'r Tri Chwm helps people and families and carers to deal with these problems.'
Tredegar Town Mayor, Geraint Meredith also has special reason for his choice of charity, Valley SANDS. Geraint and Rhianan are now blessed with 3 beautiful boys Ethan, Elijah and Caleb but sadly their oldest brother Joshua died at birth. Valleys SANDS helped them at this difficult time and ever since Geraint and Rhianan have been active supporters of the group. Geraint added, 'We know at first had what enormous help this group gives. Through our involvement with Valleys SANDS we realise how many families are affected by the loss of a child and the importance of this charity in our community. All funds raised will go to providing Memory Boxes to Nevill Hall, Prince Charles and Royal Gwent hospitals. These contain hand knitted clothes and blankets, teddies, hand and foot print kits and information to help parents through their loss.'
If you want to take part in this unique event and help with these charity appeals, sponsor forms can be obtained from Chris Smith, The Mayors Officer at Blaenau Gwent or Christine Keane, Town Clerk of Tredegar Town Council. Chris can be contacted in the Civic Centre, Ebbw Vale on 01495 355296 or at . Christine Keane can be contacted at Bedwellty House, Tredegar on 01495 722352 or at

•    5 new bridges have been constructed along the new section of the A465 and 1bridge has been demolished.

•    To complete the project 161,000 metres3 of rock has been excavated and crushed for use in building the road.
•    6,278 metres of concrete piles installed - almost 8 times the height of the Burj Khalifa tower in Dubai, the tallest building in the world.
•    20,370 metres of mine workings drilling has been completed. This is nearly enough to drill to the other side of the world and back.

TREDEGAR WALKS FOR LIFE, Sunday 3rd May 2015

This year sees the 25th annual Walk for Life held in Tredegar. Over that time it has covered most of the town and certainly both of its parks and several of its woodlands. This year the Walk will be held at Parc Bryn Bach on Sunday 3rd May at 3.00 pm.
The Walk for Life is a series of sponsored walks held at locations throughout Wales. Many different organisations and families who have been affected by kidney disease organise the Walks, gathering together colleagues, friends and family to participate to raise vital funds and awareness for kidney patient care and well-being.
One such patient joining the walk is Elaine Holbrook from Ebbw Vale. Elaine found herself desperately ill in 2012 and started dialysis after a 10 week stay in hospital.. Doctors put Elaine on the live transplant list in February 2014 and miraculously a donor was found within weeks and she received her transplant in March 2014.
A kidney transplant operation is still a major operation and runs the risk of rejection but thankfully all went well thanks to the excellent team at the University Hospital Wales in Cardiff. Elaine added, 'I know how lucky I was and I owe so much to so many, my family, the staff in Cardiff but most of all to the brave family who thought about someone else in their darkest hour. Going on the Walk for Life is just a small payback to the wonderful doctors and donors who gave me my life back.'
Urging support for the walk, Deputy Mayor, Cllr Geraint Meredith added, 'it is important to raise awareness of transplantation issues as none of us know when our family or friends may need it. Please come along and support this cause.'
Tredegar Town Council welcomes you to join us at Parc Bryn Bach. For your sponsor form call Christine or Annette on 01495 722352 or call into Bedwellty House for one. Free T-Shirts for all walkers.
